The 2nd Ahmedabad World Environment Day Festival (AWF’14) is shaping up as the biggest and the longest festival of Gujarat celebrating environment day. This year, AWF will be a weeklong celebration from 1st to 8th June that will include more than a dozen interesting activities.
World Environment Day, popularly known as WED is an annual event that is aimed at being the biggest and most widely celebrated global day for positive environmental action. WED activities take place all year round and climax on 5th June every year, involving everyone from everywhere.
The WED celebration began in 1972 and has grown to become one of the main vehicles through which the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and encourages political attention and action.
The WED theme declared by UNEP for this year , “Raise your voice, not sea level” is basically focusing on how climate change is affecting the marine environment. As we talk about climate change leading to rise in sea level, how do we, people of non-coastal region like Ahmedabad connect with these issues??
What can be a better way than bringing the Gentle Giant, a 50-feet inflatable real-like whale shark in our city and then make her talk about the issues, through fun-filled shows. Our goal is for every participant to walk away thinking “I had a great day, I didn’t know I can also contribute to environment so easily!”
